The University of Southern Mississippi Counseling Psychology Student Government will hold the second annual Voodoo Run 5K Saturday, April 26 at Walthall Park, located at the corner of Walnut and Rebecca Avenues in downtown Hattiesburg. The event is a fundraiser for the university's Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic to help it provide mental health services to Southern Miss students and community members.

The Technology Learning Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus is hosting Limb Loss Awareness Education Day on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event, designed to heighten community awareness of those living with and caring for limb loss, will be held at the Technology Learning Center, located on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

~~After weeks of anticipation, University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus student Stephanie McCracken was “shocked and honored” to receive official word from Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett that she was selected as a 2014 Truman Scholar. McCracken is the only recipient chosen from a Mississippi institution.

A veteran Gulf Coast law enforcement officer has been chosen to lead the police department at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Ben Dedwylder, who was the assistant superintendent of security at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, was promoted last week to lieutenant and head of the Gulf Coast division of University Police. He will manage operations at Gulf Park, Point Cadet and Cedar Point.

The annual Golden Eagle Powwow at The University of Southern Mississippi will include School Day April 17 on the Hattiesburg campus.  The powwow’s activities focus on the history and lifeways of Southeastern American Indians, with guided opportunities for real-world applications of math, science, social studies and language arts.

The University of Southern Mississippi will celebrate Earth Week 2014 with a full schedule of activities set for April 21-25 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Chief among those will be a ceremony to announce a Tree Campus USA designation by the Arbor Foundation. A special ceremony will be held on Earth Day -- Tuesday, April 22 -- at 8 a.m. on the brick pathway of West Memorial Plaza, just south of Forrest County Hall.

The University of Southern Mississippi's institutional repository, The Aquila Digital Community, commemorated a significant milestone on March 20 as the site logged its 100,000th full text download. Aquila, which collects and preserves the research and scholarship of Southern Miss faculty and students, launched in January 2012 and has grown rapidly in the past two years.

The Clothesline Project, a national violence awareness and prevention program, will be held at The University of Southern Mississippi April 21-24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Weathersby Lawn, located between Shoemaker Square and Walker Science Building on the Hattiesburg campus. This free event, held in conjunction with Sexual Assault Crisis Month, is open to the public.
