HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for the Study of War and Society will host the second War and Society Roundtable of the semester at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County.
The 2009-10 roundtable series focuses on war fiction and the featured novel this is “Slacks and Calluses: Our Summer in a Bomber Factory,” by Constance Bowman Reid and Clara Marie Allen. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ruth Percy, visiting assistant professor of history.
“Slacks and Calluses: Our Summer in a Bomber Factory” tells the first-hand account of two women’s experiences during World War II. Reid and Allen spent the summer of 1943 assembling B-24 Liberator bombs for the war. The two chronicled their daily lives as workers in a bomb factory.

Anthropology and Sociology Research Colloquium set for Oct. 14 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Dr. Any Chasteen Miller, chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at The University of Southern Mississippi, will present her research on hospital birth practices from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 in the Liberal Arts Building room 203.
This is the first research presentation in the 2009-10 Anthropology and Sociology Research Colloquium.
The presentation titles, “Behind the Scenes in a Labor and Delivery Unit,” is based on an in-depth observation Miller conducted at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg to get an “insider’s view” on childbirth practices, decisions and conflicts. Faculty and graduate students from the department will present their research in an informal setting to foster discussion and encourage the possibility of collaborative research.
