Longtime University of Alabama professor Michael Dugan considers himself fortunate to be joining the faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi School of Accounting.
But talk to his future superiors at Southern Miss and one quickly understands that they feel lucky to have an educator of Dugan’s stature coming on board.
“Mike Dugan is undoubtedly one of the most caring, beloved and respected accounting professors in the nation,” said Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the School of Business at Southern Miss. “I say this not only as an observation of comments from others, but also as his former student at the University of Alabama. Mike takes the time to get to know his students and genuinely cares about them as students and as individuals.”
Dugan, 52, is set to join the Southern Miss faculty for the Fall 2010 semester in the new Horne Professor position. According to Dr. Skip Hughes, director of the School of Accountancy at Southern Miss, the new position was created as part of a financial contribution from the Horne CPA Group in 2009.
Dugan earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from the University of New Orleans and his master’s degree in accountancy and doctor of business administration from the University of Tennessee. For the past 25 years he has taught at Alabama’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy. A Dallas, Texas native who grew up in New Orleans, Dugan was recognized by the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants as the 2009 Outstanding Accounting Educator. He is a Certified Public Accountant (Louisiana, inactive) who has also published 45 articles in both academic and professional journals.
“I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the teaching, research and service missions of the School of Accountancy at USM,” said Dugan. “I also greatly appreciate the generosity of the professionals at Horne for providing the funding for my professorship.”
Hughes said Dugan has already made a significant impact on the Southern Miss accounting program by helping place several master’s of professional accountancy (MPA) graduates in accounting firms over the past few months.
“Mike is the consummate caring professor, dedicated not only to student learning, but also to enabling students to successfully commence their accounting careers upon graduation,” said Hughes. “Mike is a ‘team player’ and he is a terrific addition to USM’s accounting team.”
Dugan and his wife, Stacie, have two children – Patrick, 12, and Bethany, 10.
