of Southern Mississippi Police
today apprehended a suspect in connection with a series of auto burglaries that have occurred on campus in recent weeks.

Anthony Choice, 31, of Hattiesburg and a former food services employee at Southern Miss, was arrested by University Police this morning shortly after he came to campus to collect a paycheck. He has been charged with auto burglary and transferred to the Forrest County Regional Jail.

Prior to Choice’s arrest, an investigation led police to a Hattiesburg residence where Choice had been living, where evidence was discovered pointing to his involvement in the burglaries. Many of the stolen items were recovered in the investigation, which was aided by an eyewitness to one of the 12 reported burglaries. The Hattiesburg Police Department provided assistance with the case.

University Police urges members of the campus community to take the following steps to avoid becoming victims of an auto burglary:
Do not leave valuables in vehicles; secure them in the trunk or remove.* Remove radio faceplates and store in a safe place.
Keep vehicles locked at all times.
Check your vehicle on a regular basis if it is only used periodically.
* Park in established, illuminated parking lots.
Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to police.
Promptly call police if your vehicle has been burglarized, or you discover that property in the vehicle is missing.

For more information, or to make a report of suspicious activity or a crime, call the University of Southern Mississippi Police Department at 601.266.4986.
