Registration has opened for the 43rd annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival at The University of Southern Mississippi, set for April 7-9, 2010 at the Thad Cochran Center.

The annual event features presentations and seminars offered by some of the country’s top children’s literature authors and illustrators, with one being chosen for the festival’s top honor, the Southern Miss Medallion. This year’s recipient is illustrator and author David Wiesner, producer of more than 20 award-winning books for young readers, three of which have been honored with the prestigious Caldecott Medal: “Tuesday”’; “The Three Pigs”; and most recently, “Flotsam.”

Other renowned presenters scheduled to attend the festival include LuLu Delacre; Charles Ghigna; Maureen Johnson; Walter Mayes; Richard Peck; and Dan Yaccarino.

The festival, which has drawn thousands of people from across the country over the years, began as a way to showcase the university’s renowned de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, considered a leading research center in the field of children’s literature. Founded in 1966 by Dr. Lena Y. de Grummond, the collection was established to preserve the primary literature of children and young adults and serve as a valuable resource for researchers of children’s literature.

In 2001, the festival was named in honor of retired elementary school teacher Fay B. Kaigler, a native Mississippian and longtime supporter of the festival and Southern Miss who taught in the public schools of California and Mississippi for 33 years. The festival’s Kaigler-Lamont Award recognizes teachers and librarians for distinguished accomplishments in promoting children's reading.

Register for the festival online at or call 601.266.4228 for more information.
