Groundbreaking ceremonies for Ogletree House renovation/expansion

Officials of The Southern Miss Alumni Association will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for the Ogletree House renovation. Free Marine Career Expo for high school students
Time: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Location: At the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs
This event for grades 9-12 will teach students about professions and trades that connect people to the marine and coastal environments. Participants may choose one of four field trips -- a pontoon trip to Deer Island, Back Bay and Gulf Islands National Seashore; a trawl trip aboard the GCRL’s RV Tom McIlwain; a marine aquaculture tour; a kayaking trip in Davis Bayou. The exhibition, “Sculpting America” kicks off Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the Southern Miss Museum of Art and runs through Feb. 14. The exhibit features the combined works of six celebrated American artists. A closing reception is planned from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 14. Fusing together a hodgepodge of nontraditional sculpting materials, such as fabrics, glass, iron, human hair and chewing gum, with a diverse repertoire of stylistic techniques, “Sculpting America” will present a tangible illustration of the evolution of art and culture in American society.
The University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art is located in the Fine Arts Building at the southwest corner of campus. The hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the museum is free and open to the public.
