The University of Southern Mississippi launched its 2010 United Way campus campaign with a kickoff breakfast on the Hattiesburg campus Tuesday. The university’s effort supports the United Way of Southeast Mississippi’s overall 2010 campaign.
Led by co-chairs Dr. David R. Davies, dean of the Honors College, and Vrita Delaine, assistant to the vice president for student affairs, the campus campaign goal is $100,000. Last year Southern Miss exceeded that amount by raising $112,719, a 28 percent increase over the previous year and the largest amount ever contributed by the university in support of the United Way’s annual campaign.
On Saturday, the Student United Way at Southern Miss, assisted by representatives from other campus organizations and local Boy Scouts, will collect donations for the campus campaign at the Golden Eagles’ home football game against the University of Memphis. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Supporting the Student United Way for this Saturday’s game day collection are the Student Government Association; Leadership Scholars; Southern Miss Activities Council; Delta Sigma Pi; Freshman Associates; and AASO, among others.
The United Way of Southeast Mississippi provides support for many local human service agencies. Three are at Southern Miss, including the Children’s Center for Communication and Development; the DuBard School for Language Disorders; and the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention.
Team captains have been selected and will contact faculty, staff and students across campus to solicit support for the campaign. For more information on how to support the Southern Miss 2010 United Way campaign, contact Vrita Delaine at 601.266.4025; or David Davies at 601.266.4533.
