The winning images from “Life in a Snapshot,” a juried photo exhibit hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi Department of Anthropology and Sociology, will be showcased in Hattiesburg’s historic Saenger Theatre May 11-31.

The first year of the contest yielded greater responses than the department initially anticipated. After the March 2010 call for submissions was released, Southern Miss faculty and students submitted more than 250 photos for review. A total of 40 images were selected for the exhibit, which will open to the public after an invitation only opening reception for the top 40 photographers is held May 11 from 7-9 p.m.

“It was a tough call,” Dr. Amy Miller, chair of the department, said of the selection process. “The reason we started this is because we saw some of our students’ photos and were impressed. The work is outstanding. I definitely see it as illustrating the range of things people see as part of human cultural life.”

Each photo reflects the photographer’s unique perspective on social life, which is central to the disciplines of anthropology and sociology. Student photos sparked the department’s interest in hosting an exhibit to allow the public to express their views on society and how they view the world.

“It’s an exercise in visual anthropology and sociology,” said Dr. Dana Fennell, assistant professor of sociology. “It’s a chance for them to draw attention to the social issues and problems they see relevant to their lives.”
