Writing catchy tunes is second nature for Nashville songwriter and entrepreneur Justin Peters, who will give a special songwriter workshop Jan. 11 – 15 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Structured like a one-week mini session, this workshop is designed to guide participants through the process of songwriting for popular music, film, television and commercials. Marketing, publishing and distribution of original compositions will also be discussed in order to help participants turn this specialized skill into a career or moneymaking hobby.

In July 2009, Justin Peters donated a commemorative plaque to the university on behalf of his father, country songwriter and Southern Miss alum Ben Peters. With more than 25 years in the publishing industry, Justin Peters has written songs for artists such as Jimmy Fortune, Bill Engvall, Twila Paris, Amy Grant, Michael James Murphy and Ann Downing to name a few. He currently serves as president of the Nashville-based company Songs for the Planet, Inc.

The Southern Miss Entertainment Industry Program prepares students for challenging careers in recording, broadcasting and live production or management fields through two tracks of study. Both the production and management track will lead to a bachelor of science degree in entertainment industry.

The songwriter’s workshop is sponsored by the School of Music’s Entertainment Industry program and costs $350.00 per participant. This event is open to the public. The deadline to register is Dec. 10. For more information, call Dr. Paul Linden at 601.266.6324. For more information about the Entertainment Industry program, visit
