Student Health Services at The University of Southern Mississippi now has the H1N1 (swine flu) injection vaccine available free of charge to university students, faculty, staff, their spouses and children.

The injection vaccine will be administered to anyone between the ages of 12-24. Those over the age of 24 must meet the following criteria:

·         Works in the medical field (this includes any student or faculty who will be doing clinicals

·         Has an underlying condition such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or any autoimmune disorder

·         Lives with or works with infants under the age  of 6 months.
Student Health Services cannot vaccinate anyone under the age of 12 or pregnant.

In addition to the injection vaccine, Student Health Services still has plenty of the nasal flu mist vaccine on hand for those who prefer that option. Jodi Tate, health education wellness & promotion coordinator with Student Health Services, says now is the optimum time to get the vaccine.

“We are really encouraging students to get vaccinated before going home for the holidays,” she said. “We usually see a large increase in the flu after the holidays, probably because so many people are coming back to campus after being exposed to the flu in a different environment.

“This is the season when flu is most prevalent. We are asking students to not only get vaccinated for themselves but also to help keep the spread of the virus to a minimum.”
