Parents of University of Southern Mississippi students will have a unique opportunity to experience college life first-hand during the inaugural Family Weekend set for April 9-11 on the Hattiesburg campus.
Events ranging from a residence hall luau, to a mother-daughter tea social, to the annual Black and Gold Spring Football Game will be part of the weekend celebration which was conceived by the Parent Programming Committee at Southern Miss.
In an ongoing outreach effort to parents and families of Southern Miss students, the committee designed Family Weekend as a means of showcasing the various activities and experiences associated with campus life.
“Most parents are proud of their child for being a college student and it is wonderful for them to see their world, meet their friends and see where their child spends time during the academic year,” said Lisa Moore, Parent Programming Committee chair and assistant director of Greek Life at Southern Miss.
Moore notes that many families hear about the “happenings” on campus from their respective students but having those family members actually engage in an entire weekend of activities provides the idea opportunity to bring the Southern Miss experience closer to home.
Adina Narcisee Green, a committee member and assistant director of Student Support Services Program at Southern Miss, considers the Family Weekend concept a “win-win” situation. “Parenthood does not end at high school graduation, neither does parental interest nor the desire for parental involvement,” said Green. “This weekend allows parents to remain in touch with their collegiate student and his or her new environment and activities, while allowing them to meet other parents who are doing the same.”
Green, Moore and other members of the Parent Programming Committee, hope parents and family members will provide feedback following the weekend’s events via a link that will be available on the Southern Miss parent Web page at www.usm.edu/parents
The special weekend also accompanies the university’s yearlong Centennial celebration. “Being that it is the Centennial year for Southern Miss, it is exciting to partner with various campus units to see a great variety of events take place over the course of the three days,” said Moore.
