Southern Miss Gulf Coast Earns Six Awards from the Public Relations Association of Mississippi

GULFPORT, Miss.
– The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast received six professional awards at the 2008 Public Relations Association of Mississippi Conference held recently in Hattiesburg. The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Department of Marketing and Public Relations includes Shelia White, director of marketing and public relations; Judy Isbell, director of web-based marketing; and Charmaine Williams, public relations associate.

In the category of writing for public relations, Williams received an Award of Excellence for the news release “Tourism Management Students Tour the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.” Williams’ feature story “Quilt Project Raises Money for Hancock County Libraries” was also recognized with an Award of Excellence.

The department, along with the Southern Miss Department of Marine Science, was recognized with the Certificate of Achievement in the category of special public relations program for the new bachelor’s degree in marine science. Also in this same category, these two departments with the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Research Laboratory received a second Certificate of Achievement for the Name the Research Vessel entry.

For the public service program category, the department, along with the Issues + Answers committee, received a Certificate of Achievement for Mississippi Governor Candidates Debate.

White, Williams and Dr. Deanne Nuwer, assistant professor in the Southern Miss Department of History, were recognized for their work with the Katrina Research Center’s “Katrina Kollection.” The group received a Certificate of Achievement in the competition’s potpourri category.

The Certificate of Achievement recognizes notable work in the field of public relations and the Award of Excellence is given to work worthy of recognition.
