HATTIESBURG, Miss. – There are field trips, and then there are unique excursions like the one taken by 35 Southern Miss students to Fallen Oaks Golf Course and the Beau Rivage Casino Resort on Sept. 30.

The students, enrolled in Casino Resorts Operations Management and Casino Marketing courses, got an up-close glimpse at how the Beau Rivage caters to its clients by offering high-end amenities such as first-class golf facilities.

“Ultimate customer service is what we offer here at Fallen Oaks,” said General Manager David Stinson. “We know every detail of our clients’ wants and desires, from their favorite drink to their favorite shampoo.”

The trip also included access to the Beau Rivage’s high-roller suites, a view of behind-the-scenes operations and job application tips by members of the casino’s human resources team. On top of that, the students also received advice from Mississippi Gaming Commission Deputy Director Eddie Williams, Director of Enforcement Rich Randall and senior executives of the Beau Rivage.

“The students were overwhelmed with the networking and opportunities with top-level executives and the executives’ willingness to invest time and resources in their learning and placement success,” said Evelyn Green, casino, hospitality and tourism management instructor at Southern Miss.

The highlight of the tour was a personal invitation from George Corchis, Jr., president and COO of MGM Mirage’s Mississippi Operations to join him and Rogena Barnes, vice-president of human resources, on his private balcony. Corchis shared his management philosophy and details about his personal success story.

“This was not just another field trip,” said Green. “The exposure and knowledge gained is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the students, and for some, a life-changing experience.”
