HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jazz pianist Jeff Gardner will join The University of Southern Mississippi Jazz Lab Bands I in concert at 7:30 p.m. April 25 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center on the Hattiesburg Campus.
Jazz studies director Larry Pannella described Gardner as a “fantastic player and teacher” who brings a wealth of knowledge about “straight ahead” jazz in the post bop tradition, as well as more contemporary jazz.
The Jazz Lab Band I, under Panella’s direction, will perform a mix of standards, including a Samba arrangement of “Bluesette,” Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence” and a couple of Gardner’s own original compositions. Jazz Lab Band II will also perform under the direction of graduate assistant Jody Besse.
The Southern Miss band will again appear at the 12th annual Jazz in the Grove Festival April 26 in Bay Springs. Gardner will join Panella’s own quartet for a set.
Born in New York, Gardner moved to Brasil in 2002. After studying classical piano, he moved into the jazz arena under the tutelage of many jazz greats. He has performed with musicians like Kenny Wheeler, Gary Peacock, Norma Winstone and many others.
The pianist has recorded 15 CD's as a leader, including ”Spirit Call” (solo), “Continuum” with Eddie Gomez and Billy Hart, “Alchemy” with Gary Peacock, “Second Home” with Rick Margitza, and “Sky Dance” (recorded in Rio de Janeiro) with Gilberto Gil, Carlos Malta, and more. His newest release, "Breath" (Terramar), features Drew Gress and Anthony Pinciotti.
Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Southern Miss Jazz Station at 601.266.4047. For more information about Gardner, visit www.jeffgardnermusic.com.
