Dr. Kristi Lofton, a research scientist at the University of Southern Mississippi, captured the School Nutrition Association’s 2009 Child Nutrition Showcase Award for Research at the organization’s 63rd annual national conference last month in Las Vegas.
Lofton, 37, serves as a nutrition expert in the Applied Research Division of the National Food Service Management Institute at Southern Miss. Her presentation at the national conference focused on best childcare practices, which include maintaining a healthy environment, proper nutrition and other research abstracts.
“It is a big thing for our department to receive this kind of national recognition,” said Lofton, who is also a registered dietician. “There were a lot of childcare providers in attendance at the conference who could have benefited from the research we presented.”
This represents the third consecutive year that the Applied Research Division at Southern Miss has won the showcase award. “We want to keep it going,” said Lofton. “We’re already gearing up for next year.”
