The University of Southern Mississippi’s Museum of Art will present its first exhibition of the spring semester Jan. 22-March 3, featuring "Cross Connections 2009," an international graphic design exhibition. A free public opening reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. Jan. 22.
An international exchange event, the exhibition will represent a significant overview of international graphic design trends, featuring work by professors and students, from four institutions that are making their mark in the graphic design field within their respective countries.
The universities represented include: The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Art and Design; the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Shen Yang, China; die Hochschule für Wirtschaft, Technik und Gestaltung, Trier, Germany; and the University of Texas at Arlington Department of Art and Art History. The special curator of the exhibition is Southern Miss Assistant Professor of graphic design Ping Xu.
"This is a design exhibition that transcends cultural and international boundaries," said William Baggett, chair of the Southern Miss Department of Art and Design. “The main purpose of the event is to celebrate the growing awareness of the importance of visual communication/graphic design in the 21st century and the worldwide impact of a common visual language in the increasingly competitive world economy.”
“Cross Connections” is a traveling exhibition, according to Jan Siesling, director of the Southern Miss museum. “Our student and faculty works will be exhibited at the University of Texas at Arlington's Visual Communication Gallery and the two overseas institutions in the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010.”
