The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) and its J.L. Scott Marine Education Center will serve as a remote public access site for the Obama Administration’s Gulf Coast Regional Ocean Policy Task Force Public Meeting to be held, Monday, Oct. 19. The public is invited to attend and an opportunity for public comment will be provided.

Recognized as a national Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center, GCRL was selected as one of four remote sites to host an interactive video teleconference as part of the Task Force’s public meeting, which will take place at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. Questions and/or comments will be fielded from each satellite site on a 15-minute rotation basis for the last two hours of the listening session. Speaker cards will be used for this process, so all questions/comments can be documented across the Gulf of Mexico region.

The video teleconference will be held in GCRL’s Caylor Auditorium, 703 East Beach Drive in Ocean Springs, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. (CST). Panel members involved in the Ocean Policy Task Force public meeting were selected by the Council on Environmental Quality and include: Chair Nancy Sutley; White House Council on Environmental Quality;
Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere  and Administrator of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Peter Silva, Assistant Administrator for Water, Environmental Protection Agency;  Associate Deputy Secretary Laura Davis, Department of Interior; and
Admiral Thad Allen, U.S. Coast Guard Commandant.

The Task Force, established by President Barack Obama via presidential memorandum on June 12, is charged with developing a recommendation for a national policy that ensures protection, maintenance, and restoration of oceans, our coasts and the Great Lakes. It will also recommend a framework for improved stewardship, and effective coastal and marine spatial planning.
