In late 2007, the Southern Miss Center of Higher Learning (CHL) at the John C. Stennis Space Center signed a partnership agreement with CORE Projects and Technologies, based in India and Atlanta, to train students from throughout India using the leading three-dimensional visualization technology. The first group of 14 students arrived in January 2008 and began their course of study, which includes lecture and hands-on instruction.

Utilizing the pioneering Cave Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE), which creates a 3-D immersive environment, the students visualize information through this interactive learning medium to better understand applications in areas such as physics, chemistry, molecular science, biology, computer science, mammography, mathematics and much more.

In June 2008, a second class of 15 students began their training. This inaugural group of 29 students will spend nine to 12 months learning about the various aspects of immersive visualization including various software application interfaces, design of graphic applications, procurement of essential equipment and other important details.  Upon completion, the students will return to India ready to create virtual reality applications to be hosted on computers in an immersive visualization system.

This collaboration is an innovative and unique vision for learning and enhancing the world’s educational system. CHL’s director Joe Swaykos notes, “The Center’s collaboration with CORE will enable this cutting-edge technology to be used in the field of education. We are confident the effort will help take learning to a significantly higher level as students around the globe experience this one-of-a-kind immersive learning environment.”

While visualization is one applied technology located at the center, CHL also houses a Geospatial Applications Laboratory in addition to its primary mission of providing educational and workforce development opportunities to Stennis Space Center and the surrounding communities.
