Want to update your wardrobe without spending a fortune? Then check out the “Passion for Fashion” consignment sale April 26-30 in the Union building on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The annual event, coordinated by students taking the fashion promotion and analysis course this semester, will kick off Saturday, Aug. 24 with a free preview and launch party in the Union lobby.

According to Dr. Brigitte Burgess, associate professor in the Department of Marketing and Fashion Merchandising, the purpose of the project is to provide students with practical experience in store planning, promotion, merchandising, logistics, accounting and customer service while enhancing critical learning and teamwork skills.

“Each year students try to add a new dimension to ‘Passion for Fashion.’ This year they wanted to add the fashion show,” said Burgess. “Students from Southern Miss are partnering with students from Jones County Junior College, Oak Grove, Petal and Wayne County to accomplish this task.”

Shoppers who browse through the “Passion for Fashion” event will find a multitude of clothing and jewelry in all sizes displayed in excellent condition. Items for sale include suits, skirts, blouses, coats, jackets, blazers, business attire, casual attire, handbags, wallets, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, watches, hats, scarves and gloves.

Consigners will receive 60 percent of the selling price for items that sell. Net proceeds from the event will be used to fund academic scholarships, travel, research grants for undergraduates and competitive awards such as prize money in the forms of grants for fashion merchandising students. Many of the items not sold are donated to charity with the owners’ consent.

“These students are in charge of conceptualizing, creating, operating and analyzing outcomes of a consignment sale,” said Burgess. “Students are engaged in every aspect of the sale from pre-sale planning to post-sale evaluation and critique.”

Several area retailers have provided door prizes for the fashion show guests. For more information call 601-266-4627. To participate as a consignor go to www.passionforfashion.org
