Officials with the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi were particularly pleased to learn than the Heathcock family of Hattiesburg had been selected for ABC’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.”
That’s because 10-year-old Gary Heathcock has been participating in the DuBard School’s Language Enhancement and Achievement Program (LEAP) initiative, an out-client service. Gary attends Sacred Heart School in Hattiesburg and joins other LEAP students in after-school sessions.
Gary, his parents Sherman and Gina Heathcock, sisters Annie, 12, and Tessa, 7, were greeted by host Ty Pennington and the “Extreme Home Makeover” design team this morning (Dec. 3) to hear the good news about being selected for the show. While the family vacations at Disney World, the “Extreme Home Makeover” crew, with help from AAA Homes of Mississippi and community volunteers, will rebuild the Heathcocks’ home in seven days.
“We could not be happier for the Heathcock family,” said Maureen Martin, director of the DuBard School. “They are one of America’s brave military families. Sherman and Gina are devoted parents who value education and therefore they make sacrifices to ensure their children receive the best education possible. We, at the DuBard School for Language Disorders, are proud to say we can help their son continue to grow and learn. The Heathcocks truly deserve this wonderful honor.”
Sherman Heathcock re-enlisted in the Army National Guard after the 9/11 attacks. He has served two tours of duty in Iraq. He has worked several jobs over the past several years in attempt to repair damage done to the family’s home by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005..
