The College of Health and Recreational Sports at The University of Southern Mississippi is sponsoring "Fit Over 50: Exercise and Healthy Aging" in recognition of Healthy Aging® Month.
Community members age 50 and older are invited to bring a sack lunch and listen to a presentation by Jerry Purvis, School of Human Performance and Recreation professor, and Susan Bone, assistant director of wellness for Recreational Sports. The event begins at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, and a beverage and dessert will be provided.
"With individuals living longer, it is vital for them to maintain a quality of life, the foundation of which is good health and functional fitness that allows for normal activities and for individuals to maintain an independent lifestyle," said Dr. Susan Hubble-Burchell, interim director of the School of Human Performance and Recreation
September is Healthy Aging® Month, an annual observance designated by Educational Television Network, Inc. to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older through the encouragement of local level Healthy Aging events.
