Jackson Prep students spent April 12-13 immersed in “hands-on learning” at Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Coastal Sciences Camp in Ocean Springs, Miss. Pictured left to right, GCRL marine educator Becky Hardgrove, seventh graders Simmon Barraza and Mille Waller, and teacher Brian Jones, identify marine species netted along East Beach. The camp is designed for students in grades 4-12 to experience the coastal ecosystems of Mississippi firsthand, in the field and in the lab. (GCRL photo by Susan Carranza)

Seventh graders from Jackson Prep learn about the salt marsh and its inhabitants first-hand during a Coastal Sciences Camp Held April 12-13 at Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, Miss. GCRL marine educator Michael Carley, right, explains the importance of the salt marsh as a vital nursery-ground for fish and crabs, as students Ty Thompson, middle, and Mpho Molapo, left foreground, check their nets for specimens.
