Beginning Monday, Dec. 14 construction on the Centennial Gateway at the entrance of The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus will mean temporary changes to traffic flow and parking in the area.
The next phase of the project will include construction into the roadway of both East and West Memorial Drive, which is expected to continue through early January 2010. Visitors and members of the campus community members can expect road closures and loss of parking on West Memorial Drive exiting campus. Motorist can travel on Southern Miss Drive east and west to exit campus during this time.
Once this phase of construction is complete, West Memorial Drive will re-open to traffic flow and parking. Contractors will then shift their work to East Memorial Drive, causing temporary closure of the main entrance to campus and loss of parking. During this phase of construction, signage will direct the campus community and visitors to enter campus via 31st Avenue and Ross Boulevard, and there will be limited use of the Visitors Kiosk.
Designed by Albert & Associates Architects of Hattiesburg, the privately funded, 125-foot-plus wide brick and cast stone structure is being constructed by B.W. Sullivan Building Contractor Inc., also of Hattiesburg. It is scheduled for dedication on Founderís Day, March 30, 2010.
