Dr. Robert P. Watson, associate professor of American Studies at Lynn University, will present the lecture “The History of Presidential Sex Scandals” Friday, August 21 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Holloway Complex A on the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
During his lecture, Watson will explore the evolution of the presidency through the lens of the historical sex scandals that have plagued the office. Watson is currently writing a book on the subject, titled White House Affairs: A History of Presidential Sex, Love, and Scandal.
“Southern Miss is extremely proud to be able to host a scholar of Robert's caliber and we look forward to his address as a way to launch the new academic year and provoke debate and discussion among faculty, staff and students,” said Southern Miss Gulf Coast Academic Dean Tom Lansford, who organized the event.
Watson has nearly 30 books published on subjects that include presidential history and politics, public administration and environmental politics. Also a leading expert on First Ladies, Watson directs and edits the “Report to the First Lady,” which is presented to the First Lady and the White House every four years following the presidential inauguration.
A frequent media commentator, Watson has been interviewed numerous times by local, national and international media outlets. He has appeared on C-SPAN’s “Book TV,” “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” “The Daily Show with John Stewart,” CNN’s “Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff,” Fox’s “Special Report with Brit Hume” among others.
Watson has served on the boards of several scholarly journals, academic associations and community foundations, as well as with the Harry Truman Foundation, the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation and the George McGovern Library and Center for Public Service.
