A research team in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE) at The University of Southern Mississippi was recently chosen as one of four research development teams to win the Tech in the Works 2010 competition.

The National Center for Technology Innovation (NCTI) at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in Washington, D.C sponsors the competition to promote excellence in research on educational and assistive technologies to improve educational outcomes for all students, with a particular focus on students with special needs.

Members of the CISE team are Judi Emerson, lead researcher and doctoral student; Dr. John Bishop, supervising research professor; Dr. Linda McDowell, principal investigator; Toni Hollingsworth, director of the Mississippi Deafblind Project; and David Hale, senior marketing manager from Sorenson Communications, Inc.

The annual competition calls for “quick turnaround” collaborative research to inform the development of innovative and emerging assistive technologies. It is an opportunity for NCTI to foster collaboration between researchers and developers across a wide range of disabilities.
