A University of Southern Mississippi graduate’s dissertation has been recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with one of its top awards.
Dr. Sharee Broussard, an instructor of communication arts at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., received CASE’s annual Alice L. Beeman Research Award in Communications and Marketing for Educational Advancement for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation this year. She earned her doctorate in mass communication with a minor in marketing from Southern Miss in 2009.
Her dissertation, titled “Source-Message-Receiver in Integrated Marketing Communication: A Study of U.S. Institutional Advancement,” meets the award’s criteria for excellence in writing about educational advancement, and specifically research exploring advancement trends in communications and marketing in the areas of public relations, government relations, marketing, issues management and institutional image enhancement.
Broussard’s advisor, Southern Miss assistant professor of mass communication Dr. Fei Xue, said her dissertation provides much-needed theoretical support for research in educational advancement, and the results of its survey can also help educators and practitioners better understand and evaluate communication strategies utilized in educational advancement.
“Dr. Broussard is also a skilled researcher with a creative mind,” Xue said. “She has a deep understanding of both communication and advertising/marketing theories, which enables her to develop innovative research topics. Her dissertation was one of the most comprehensive studies in its area.”
Broussard was the recipient of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism’s Top Graduate Student award in 2007. An accredited public relations practitioner (APR), she completed her studies at Southern Miss while also working full time as an instructor at Spring Hill and engaging in community service.
