The University of Southern Mississippi Carillon Handbell Choir is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 11 at First Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg. The concert is free and open to the general public.

Founded in 1985, Carillon consists of 10-14 ringers selected annually through campus-wide auditions. Dr. Larry Smith, founder of Carillon and professor of voice at Southern Miss, directs the ensemble, which performs 20-25 concerts each year.

“I’m pleased to recognize the 25th anniversary of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Carillon Handbell Choir, and I wish them great success in this concert, as well as their concert tour of Ireland this summer,” said Southern Miss President Martha Saunders.

Carillon has developed a regional, national and international reputation with tours in England, Bermuda, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Italy, Scotland, Czech Republic and 22 states in the United States. The group’s noteworthy performances include appearances at National Directors’ Seminars for the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers in Reston, Va., Mobile, Ala., Tucson, Ariz. and Palm Springs, Calif.

In April 2006, at the invitation of the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras Campus, Carillon played solo and joint concerts with the university’s handbell choir and jazz band.
