of Southern Mississippi junior Michael Peacock left nothing to chance as he browsed through the various booths on display during the Spring 2010 Career Fair held Feb. 24 at the Thad Cochran Center.

“I came about as prepared as I could possibly be. I brought nine resumes with me today,” said Peacock, a business administration and entrepreneur major from Mendenhall, Miss. “I’ve been looking forward to this day for quite some time. It’s a wonderful opportunity to do some networking and get acquainted with potential employers.”

Peacock came hoping to land a summer internship. Others sought information about the possibility of full-time employment after graduation. Rusty Anderson, director of Career Services at Southern Miss, said 61 companies participated in the half-day fair.

“We do this twice a year, fall and spring and the turnout is always great,” he said. “This type of event allows students to learn more about a wide array of companies both inside and outside our area. Furthermore, it gives employers a chance to do some recruiting while promoting all of the services and job opportunities within their respective businesses.”

Companies like E&J Gallo Winery have already reaped dividends from the graduation pool at Southern Miss. The company, with headquarters in Modesto, Calif, has approximately 5,000 employees and distributes more than 60 brands of wine in 90 countries.

Trent Jackson, state manager in Mississippi for E&J Gallo Winery, said four of his eight sales representatives are Southern Miss graduates.

“We’ve had good success coming to events such as this,” said Jackson. “It gives us a chance to stick our chests out a little bit, so to speak. I tell students who come by our table that this is the kind of company that can afford them a long and satisfying career. The truth is you don’t see a lot of turnover in our company, and if you’re willing to travel there are a lot of opportunities available.”
