Time is running out to register for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam which will be sponsored by The University of Southern Mississippi School of Human Performance and Recreation on Saturday, May 8.

The deadline to register is Friday, March 12. The CSCS exam is administered under the direction of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). This marks the first time that the distinguished CSCS exam has been offered on the Southern Miss campus. Those wishing to take the exam must meet any of the following criteria:

*Hold a bachelor’s degree
*Be enrolled as a college senior at an accredited college or university
*Hold a degree in chiropractic medicine and be CPR certified

“This certification exam is considered the gold-standard in the field for the development of people and especially athletes,” said Dr. Brian Gearity, assistant professor in the Southern Miss School of Human Performance and Recreation. “Coaches, athletic trainers, personal trainers, therapists and other similar professionals would all be wise to have this certification in order to distinguish themselves and identify their level of knowledge.”

Gearity is in his first year as an assistant professor at Southern Miss. He came to Hattiesburg after serving eight years as strength and conditioning coach at the University of Tennessee, where he worked extensively with the baseball and football teams. Gearity currently serves as the NSCA state director for Mississippi.

“Strength and conditioning have become an integral part of society today,” said Gearity. “This exam is extremely important to anyone affiliated with programs of this nature. And we are pleased to be able to host a certification exam of this magnitude on our campus.”

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength-training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention.

The test will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 8 in Room 203 of the Human Performance and Recreation Building. For test fees and other information call 601.266.6321 or visit
