HATTIESBURG, Miss. Members of the Southern Miss community can still take advantage of the H1N1 flu mist vaccine by visiting the Student Health Services clinic on the Hattiesburg campus. The mist vaccine is free to Southern Miss students, faculty and staff with a photo ID. The vaccine is administered with a squirt into the nostril as the patient inhales.

As for who should get the H1N1 vaccine, the  Center for Disease Control has mandated that the vaccine be distributed to the following priority groups:

*Pregnant women
People age 2-24
Anyone who lives with or care for infants younger than 6 months, or who work in health care/emergency medical personnel or those with a long-term illness like asthma, cancer, HIV, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Student Health Services at Southern Miss cannot vaccinate:

*Pregnant women
*Children less than 12 years old

There are two types of H1N1 vaccines the flu mist and injection. At this time Student Health Services only has the flu mist available.

The flu mist is not recommended for:

*Anyone who is pregnant
*Anyone over the age of 49
*Anyone with a long-term illness like asthma, cancer, HIV, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
*Anyone with a weakened immune system
*Anyone who has received another live virus vaccination like the seasonal flu mist, MMR, or Vericella.

Persons listed in the final group should receive the vaccine injection only. Student Health Services hopes to have the vaccine shot available soon.
