Dustin Keys, a University of Southern Mississippi junior English major from Seminary, is the winner of the Big Read essay contest. His submission, "Rocking the Boat: Binaries in Earthsea," examined the femininity and masculinity of characters in the fantasy novel "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. LeGuin. Keys will be awarded $100 for his work.

"Dustin's essay was chosen because it demonstrated the most sophisticated and original reading of LeGuin's novel," said Dr. Nicolle Jordan, an assistant professor of English at Southern Miss.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
