Dr. Noel Polk, professor of English at Mississippi State University, will deliver a lecture titled, “Living Outside History” at 5 p.m. today in Gonzales Auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi campus. The event is open to the public and a reception will follow.

Polk is visiting Southern Miss for a week to speak with honors students. A former professor of English at Southern Miss, Polk is an internationally known scholar of William Faulkner. His lecture is co-sponsored by the Southern Miss Honors College and the Department of English.

“Noel Polk had a long and distinguished career here at Southern Miss as a literary scholar and editor before moving to Mississippi State in 2005 to assume the editorship of Mississippi Quarterly,” said Dr. Michael Mays, professor of English and chair of the department. “An expert on Southern Literature, his work on native Mississippi writer William Faulkner has garnered international acclaim. It’s safe to say that no one knows more about Faulkner than Dr. Polk. It’s a great privilege to have him back home in Hattiesburg.”

A specialist in American fiction, Polk has published and lectured widely in this country, Europe, Japan and the former Soviet Union on the works of Faulkner and Eudora Welty. Recent publications include “Eudora Welty: A Bibliography of Her Work”, “Children of the Dark House: Text and Context in Faulkner” and “Outside the Southern Myth.” He has edited the novels of William Faulkner for the Library of America and Random House, and in 2001 he edited the “restored” text of Robert Penn Warren's “All the King's Men for Harcourt Brace.”
