A University of Southern Mississippi graduate student from St. Louis, Mo. has earned a prestigious, highly competitive scholarship from the U.S. Armed Forces to complete his academic program.
Matthew Guelker, a third year doctoral student in clinical psychology, is the recipient of the F. Edward Hébert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship, awarded to only 15 people annually. The one-year scholarship is granted to a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force and funds tuition and related expenses, as well as a stipend. Guelker was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in March.
“This is a great opportunity for my professional development, as well as support of my family,” said Guelker, whose research focuses on childhood behavior problems, youth psychopathy and youth narcissism.
Guelker’s advisor, Dr. Christopher Barry, described him as “highly committed” to developing skills that will serve to reduce problems for children and families with whom he works. “I anticipate that he will serve a valuable role as a psychologist in the U.S. Army for military personnel and their families,” Barry said.
After completing his coursework at Southern Miss, Guelker will be placed in an internship at an Army Medical Center. Once he has achieved licensure, Guelker will fulfill a three-year active duty requirement as part of the program, but plans to pursue a career in the military afterward.
“I look forward to being a part of something bigger and supporting a population that gives so much of itself,” he said.
