HATTIESBURG, Miss.University of Southern Mississippi junior Caroline Randolph of Gulfport has been awarded the 2009 Mississippi Young Bankers (MYB) Leadership Scholarship.

Each year the MYB committee, a sector of the Mississippi Bankers Association, presents $1,000 to an outstanding Mississippi college student majoring in banking and finance.

“We’re so proud of Caroline,” said Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the College of Business at Southern Miss. “Her stellar academic performance paired with her extraordinary extracurricular activities and leadership roles placed her above the top finance students from all of the public universities in the state.”

Randolph, the daughter of Randy and Linda Randolph, is majoring in finance with a minor in Spanish. She says leadership skills require a proactive attitude.

“To me, being a leader is about being able to take the initiative to get things done, but also remembering that you can’t do anything by yourself,” said Randolph. “Having the ability to bring out other people’s strengths is the most important attribute when it comes to leadership.”

Randolph is spending the 2009 fall semester in Granada, Spain to polish her Spanish and study the system of laws that the European Union has implemented on greenhouse gas emissions. Following graduation, Randolph plans to pursue a master’s degree. She hopes to eventually work for a company based in the United States with international opportunities in Latin America.

The Mississippi Young Bankers Leadership Scholarship has been awarded since 1998. The mission is to not only give students monetary recognition, but also encourage them to pursue banking careers in Mississippi. For more information visit
