The annual University of Southern Mississippi Student Art Show will be presented at the Museum of Art through April 9, honoring the next generation of visual artists from the Department of Art and Design.
An opening reception is planned from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 25 at the Fine Arts Building on the southwest corner of the campus, with an awards ceremony to be held at 4:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the general public.
The juried exhibit includes a selection of artworks created by art and design majors in various media, including painting, sculpture, packaging, typography, illustration and sculpture.
More than 300 pieces were submitted by students and juried by the following experts: Jill Chancey, curator at the Lauren Rogers Museum, in the painting area; Crystal Davis, graphic designer for BICE Advertising, in the graphic arts area; and Durant Thompson, assistant professor of art at the University of Mississippi, in the sculpture area.
More than 100 pieces will be displayed for the exhibit. The jurors designated the best two pieces in each category to receive an award, as well as several honorable mentions. A best of show award will be presented for each category.
Davis, who received her bachelor’s of fine arts from Southern Miss in 2007, interned at BICE Advertising as a junior at Southern Miss. She was impressed with the creativity exhibited by the students’ work.
“The projects they’re doing are actually more creative than what I was doing in school,” Davis said. “Overall, the work looked great. There was a variety of different styles and no lack of creativity at all.”
The Department of Art and Design at Southern Miss has held an annual exhibition showcasing the talents of its students for more than 40 years. The show has long been an integral and much anticipated component of the visual arts curriculum in the department.
The museum is located in the Fine Arts Building at the southwest corner of the campus. The hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m-5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. School and community group tours are welcome. For more information, call 601.266.5200.
