University of Southern Mississippi President Dr. Martha Saunders has signed off on a new fashion schedule for Golden Eagles fans.

On Tuesday, Dr. Saunders put her signature to a decree urging Southern Miss fans to make gold part of their attire, including that with the university’s insignia, every Friday.

“Gold is one of our school colors, and we’d love to see all of our supporters dress in gold on Fridays in support of their university as well as on game day,” Saunders said. “It’s a great way to show your school spirit.”

The decree states that “Southern Miss recognizes that the color gold and the University’s insignias are symbolic representations of the traditions and spirit of the educational mission and experience at Southern Miss” and “The University recognizes that the wearing of apparel bearing the institution’s official color and/or insignias encourages unity among its diverse constituencies and will strengthen the spirit of cooperation within the community.”

Southern Miss licensing coordinator Gene Fitts came up with the idea for the decree.  While wearing gold is a great tradition on game days, he sees the new Friday tradition as another way to express pride in Southern Miss.

“When the team sees that sea of gold in the stands, it’s a real boost to them and makes the home field advantage just that – an advantage,” Fitts said. “So we want to extend that to Fridays throughout the year so there’s no doubt that we’re behind Southern Miss all the way, not just at sporting events.”
