One of the key events of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Centennial Celebration will be a university-wide community service project showcasing the school’s commitment to the Hattiesburg and surrounding areas through volunteerism.

An informational meeting about The Big Event, designed to be the largest community service project in Southern Miss history, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 12:15 – 1 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus. At that time details about the event will be unveiled and members of the university community will be informed about how they can be part of this historic event.

“So much of the university’s success has come from the support of the surrounding communities, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to give back to them during this milestone year,” said Centennial Celebration Coordinator Jennifer Payne. “It will also be a great opportunity for our students to bond in support of a great cause.”

Organizers hope what will become an annual event will draw more than 500 members of the Southern Miss family out into South Mississippi communities to get involved in a day of service set for April 10, 2010. A variety of service projects, from repairing and building homes to community beautification projects are included as part of the initiative.

“There will be service opportunities for anyone who wants to participate. It’s a great way to express our gratitude to these communities, and hopefully become a tradition at Southern Miss for the next 100 years,” said Student Government Association representative and Big Event coordinator Jessica Gilliland.

The Big Event started in 1982 at Texas A&M University with the goal of “promoting campus and community unity as students come together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from the surrounding community, through service-oriented activities.” There are now 72 campuses across the nation hosting a Big Event or similar service project.
