As part of its ongoing effort to raise environmental awareness, the Office of Sustainability at The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking nominations for the inaugural Environmental Hero Award.
Larry Lee, chief sustainability officer at Southern Miss, said the idea evolved from the EcoEagle Representative group on campus that oversees development of the Earth Week (April 19-23) celebration event schedule. Earth Day will celebrate its 40th anniversary on April 22.
Nominees should be individuals who work specifically in Mississippi, south of Interstate 20 and have contributed to a body of environmental knowledge, improved environmental literacy and have a wide-scale impact through personal stewardship by going above and beyond the letter of their job descriptions.
“The Southern Miss Environmental Hero Award offers recognition to a worthy individual in the arena of environmental awareness,” said Lee. “As leaders in the sustainability movement of Mississippi, it is important that an institution such as the University of Southern Mississippi recognize such people, their efforts and add support to continued good works.”
The winner will be recognized with a plaque and $500 during the Green Art Show on Earth Day at Cook Library on the Southern Miss campus. Nominations are due to the Office of Sustainability by Friday, April 9. Nomination forms may be obtained by contacting Lee at
