Faculty and staff in the Department of Casino, Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) at The University of Southern Mississippi are accustomed to handing out plaques and certificates of achievement.
On Monday, March 8 members of the department were on the receiving end of special certificates awarded by representatives of the 158th Infantry Brigade stationed at Camp Shelby. Lt. Col. Kerrye Glass and Maj. Carmen Plaud delivered the certificates on behalf of the 256h Infantry Brigade Combat Team which participated in a one-day crash course in hotel management last month.
“It’s my distinct pleasure to present this small token of appreciation for the effort you and your department made for us,” said Lt. Col. Glass upon presenting the certificates to Dr. Catherine Price, CHTM department chair. “The feedback we received from the soldiers who participated in the course was overwhelmingly positive.”
Approximately 30 soldiers from the 256th participated in the course taught by Southern Miss faculty in conjunction with representatives of PCH Hotels & Resorts of Alabama. The soldiers are being deployed this week to assume management duties at the Joint Visitors Bureau Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq. The Joint Visitors Bureau Hotel offers lodging for United States generals and their families; foreign dignitaries and other VIPs. During their deployment, which could last up to a year, the soldiers will assist with meal preparation, sanitation, maintenance and other hotel-related duties.
“We were just delighted to be a part of their training,” said Price. “We take great pride in knowing that we were able to give back just a little on behalf of all the great work our military personnel are doing to protect our freedoms.”
