Visitation is set for Wednesday, March 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hattiesburg for Dr. Ernest Boykins, 78, who died at his home in Hattiesburg Sunday. Boykins joined the science education faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi after serving as president of Mississippi Valley State University from 1971-1981.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Boykins’ native Vicksburg, with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Century Funeral Home in Hattiesburg and Jefferson Burial Association of Vicksburg are in charge of arrangements.

Southern Miss President Emeritus Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas became president of neighboring Delta State University in 1971, the same year Boykins was appointed second president of then Mississippi Valley State College. As both oversaw the ascension of the two institutions to university status, they struck up a friendship that lasted nearly four decades.

While leading their respective institutions, Lucas said he and Boykins worked cooperatively to bring higher education opportunities to the Mississippi Delta. He also praised his longtime colleague for being an effective teacher at Southern Miss. “I will miss his wonderful humor and friendship,” Lucas said.
