Participants in the American Legion Auxiliary’s 62nd annual Girls State gathered for the program’s opening assembly Monday at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Thad Cochran Center. Approximately 250 young women are on the university’s Hattiesburg campus for the program through Friday.

Girls State participants are rising high school seniors who get a hands-on education in government and politics during a week of staged political campaigns, elections, party caucuses and rallies in the fictitious state of “Magnolia.” They also hear from state and local public officials who explain and discuss with them the inner workings of government in Mississippi.
The program has been held on the Southern Miss campus for the last 20-plus years.
