HATTIESBURG, Miss. The focus will be on maternal and child health care during The University of Southern Mississippi School of Social Work’s annual Fall Colloquium set for Friday, Nov. 13 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The event's theme is “Mississippi’s Road to Quality Maternal and Child Health Care.” The program will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Student Union Room B/C on the Hattiesburg campus.

“The colloquium will provide a unique perspective from social workers who were part of the efforts to better provide quality care for mothers and children in Mississippi 30-40 years ago,” said Dr. Timothy Rehner, director of the School of Social Work at Southern Miss. “Additionally, current advocates and experts for maternal and child health will present their perspectives on how well we are doing in Mississippi to respond to the needs of this population.”

The keynote speaker for this year’s colloquium is Dr. Claude Fox, professor in the Department of Epidemiology Public Health, at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine. Fox formerly held the position of Deputy State Health Officer for the Mississippi Department of Health and went on to serve as the Director of the Health Services and Resources Administration in Washington, D.C.

Fox is one of only six people (the only from North America) serving on an internal pandemic influenza advisory committee to Roche Labs in Basil, Switzerland.

Rehner said the timing could not be more appropriate in addressing proper health care for mothers and children.

“The issue of maternal and child health is always important,” said Rehner. “It is particularly relevant now in a time when families are experiencing more stress as a result of fiscal realities affecting both the nation and our state.”

Four Social Work continuing education hours will be awarded for attendance at the colloquium. The cost is $20. There is no charge to attend for those not seeking continuing education hours. For more information contact Gina Florentini-Wright at 601-266-4839.
