Parents of children and youth with special health care needs in Mississippi can get the information they need about health resources, services and supports for their family through the Family 2 Family Health and Information Center.
Mississippi’s Family 2 Family Center is family-focused, family-managed and works to empower the families of children with special health care needs to be partners in the decision making concerning the health of their children. Information is available and training is focused on community resources, medical home, public and private insurance, education, and transition. Parents can join a peer-to-peer network and a bi-monthly listserv.
Innovative, best practice health information is available to families through the Family 2 Family Center. Located in the Mississippi State Department of Health Resource Library at the Jackson Medical Mall at 350 West Woodrow Wilson Boulevard, the Family 2 Family Center is Mississippi’s Family-to-Family Health Information Center (F2F HIC), funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. F2F HICs are statewide, parent-run information and referral centers located in all states.
The Family 2 Family Center is a collaboration of the Children’s Medical Program (CMP) of the Mississippi State Department of Health, Living Independence for Everyone of Mississippi, and the University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies.
Jacqueline Washington, the parent of a teen with disabilities, is parent coordinator for the Mississippi Family 2 Family Center. She also is the Parent Consultant for CMP and works with the families of children served by the Children’s Medical Program’s Blake Clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall.
“Navigating the health care system can be challenging for families of children and youth with special health care needs,“ said Jackie Washington, Family 2 Family parent coordinator. “Families have been excited to discover Mississippi has the Family 2 Family Center to provide them with needed information and resources.”
”The Family 2 Family Center provides necessary information for families of children with special health care needs to assist them in finding the resources and support they need to care for their child and their family,” said Larry Clark, director of the Children’s Medical Program.
The Institute for Disability Studies administers the Family 2 Family Center. “The Family 2 Family Center assists families of children with special health care needs to make informed choices about their children’s health care that not only promote good treatment decisions for their child but are cost effective for their family,” said Royal Walker, executive director of the Institute.
