WHAT: The Sun Herald and The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast College of Health present the Issue + Answers lecture, “Childhood Obesity: Defining the Problem Through Population Research,” with Dr. Ronald Cossman.

WHERE: Advanced Education Center auditorium at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach

WHEN: Thursday, April 15 at 7 p.m.

SPECIFICS: Cossman, an associate research professor and research fellow at Mississippi State University’s Social Science Research Center, is also research director for MS Kids Count, a leading resource for comprehensive information on Mississippi's children. Cossman’s research focuses on spatial analysis and visualization of health conditions. Using geographic information system (GIS) and data visualization technologies, Cossman investigates relationships between social and environmental factors and resulting health outcomes, such as death rate patterns and chronic illness patterns.

In addition to the lecture, the university will host a health fair in the Advanced Education Center. The health fair will feature a variety of local organizations providing toothbrushing demonstrations, nutritional evaluations, exercise demonstrations, information on stress management, information on skin cancer awareness and body mass index screenings.
