Judges are desperately needed to help evaluate projects in The University of Southern Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair (SEF) set for next month in Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast.
Thousands of Mississippi students benefit from the annual competition which Southern Miss has hosted for more than 40 years. Last year approximately 800 K-12 students participated on the Hattiesburg campus and nearly 600 on the Gulf Coast.
This year’s judging will be held as follows:
• Region I SEF for middle and high schools students on Thursday, March 4 at the Thad Cochran Center in Hattiesburg
• Region I SEF for elementary students on Thursday, March 11 at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg
• Region VI SEF on Tuesday, March 23 at the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi
In keeping with the university’s yearlong Centennial celebration, Southern Miss President Martha Saunders has established two $500 scholarships to be awarded each year to a winner from Region I SEF (Hattiesburg) and a winner from Region VI SEF (Gulf Coast). Additionally an endowed scholarship to Southern Miss has been established in honor of longtime SEF director and professor emeritus Dr. Larry Bellipanni.
Judging for this competition is considered a service to the university and does not require in-depth scientific knowledge. Judges, who may also be undergraduate and graduate students, will evaluate approximately 20 projects. Scoring sheets and lunch will be provided.
Those interested in judging on the Hattiesburg campus should register at www.usm.edu/outreach/msef.html and on the Gulf Coast at http://sciencefair.usm.edu/judge.aspx
