The following events are being held at various locations in Hattiesburg and present both interview and photo opportunities for the media. THIS WEEK

• The University of Southern Mississippi College of Arts and Letters presents an international art exhibit designed to counter misconceptions about the art and culture of women who live in the Islamic world. "Breaking the Veils: Women Artists from the Islamic World" will be on display today through Dec. 5 at the historic Hattiesburg Train Depot. Hours for this event are Wednesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 1-4 p.m. Extended hours will be available on Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. For more information, call 601.266.4315.

Percussion recital

TUESDAY, DEC. 2
Campus Emergency Planning Announcement with Guest Speaker

Time: 3 p.m. Location: Thad Cochran Center, Ballroom I
The Office of the President and Center for Spectator Sports Security Management announces the U.S. Department of Education Grant for Campus Emergency Planning. The reception will feature guest speaker Dr. Donald Grady, police chief for Northern Illinois University, the site of one of the most recent college shootings. Lighting the Way for the Holidays
Time: 5:15 p.m. Location: Front lawn of the Lucas Administration Building
The University of Southern Mississippi will kick off the holiday season with the “Lighting the Way for the Holidays” event, a tree-lighting ceremony designed to raise funds for a local charity. Visitors can get photos made with the Southern Miss mascot Seymour, as well as sample hot chocolate. Other activities include ornament-making and cookie-decorating. At 6 p.m., a brief ceremony will feature performers from the School of Music along with the lighting of more than 30 trees circling the Hardy Street entrance to the campus. Funds raised from campus organizations which sponsored the trees will benefit Habitat for Humanity. For more information, call 601.266.4407.

Sandi Patty Holiday Spectacular
Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: Temple Baptist Church
The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra presents its annual Holiday Spectacular, featuring Sandi Patty. Simply known as "the voice," Patty is one of the most highly acclaimed performers of our time with five Grammy Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three Platinum records, five Gold records and more than 11 million albums sold. Patty will join the Symphony Orchestra, Hattiesburg Choral Union and Temple Baptist Church choirs for this celebration of the season. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Children's Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss. For more information, call 601.266.5543.

Voice Recital

Jazz Bones and Hub Bones Performance
Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: Mannoni Performing Arts Center
The School of Music will present its Jazz Bones and Hub Bones concert featuring undergraduate and graduate students from the trombone studio and jazz studies program. The program will include arrangements by Southern Miss alumnus Tom “Bones” Malone of the David Letterman Show band and famous for his role in the movie “The Blues Brothers” and Dr. Bruce Tychinski, assistant professor of trombone at Southern Miss.  For more information, call 601.266.5543.

Senior Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Southern Miss Pottery, Art Sale: Friday and Saturday

Time: noon-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday Location: 3D Arts Building/ West Fourth Street
A number of pottery and sculptural objects will be on display for sale to the public. A portion of the proceeds from all sales will go back to the department to help purchase a new clay mixer for the students. For more information, call 601.266.6032.
