Members of Freshman Associates and TOMS Campus Club united to spend one day (Thursday, April 8) on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi shoeless as part of a global awareness campaign.

The barefoot students gathered at Shoemaker Square to collect shoes and monetary contributions that will be donated to needy children serviced by the Oseola McCarty Youth Fellowship Center in Hattiesburg. The initiative was part of a wider campaign by TOMS Shoes Inc.

“The idea was for people to go barefoot and experience what it’s like for children all over the world who have to live like this every day of their lives,” said sophomore Marcus Clark, who organized the TOMS Campus Club at Southern Miss.

“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve always had this desire to help others,” Clark said. “This is just one example of how we can make a difference.”

According to the TOMS Shoes Web site (, approximately 250,000 people participated in more than 1,600 events worldwide as part of the “One Day Without Shoes” event.
