HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After 37 years of service to the National Intramural- Recreational Sports Association, Sid Gonsoulin, associate vice president of student affairs and former director of Recreational Sports at The University of Southern Mississippi, has received the organization’s highest honor.
In recognition of for his achievements in the profession, Gonsoulin was awarded the NIRSA 2008 Honor Award April 5 at the NIRSA national conference in Austin, Texas.
The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, a 4,000-member higher education association, provides the education and development of professional and student members and promotes ethical and healthy lifestyle choices through quality recreation, fitness and wellness programs, and services.
Gonsoulin is quick to point out that “being recognized for lifetime achievement can only occur when many others, including family, friends and colleagues, have been supportive and doers themselves. The Southern Miss family has truly been supportive and an inspiration to me,” said Gonsoulin.
According to John Meyer from the University of Colorado and the 2006 Honor Award recipient, the award acknowledges a colleague who has distinguished himself or herself through outstanding achievements and exemplary service in the profession of recreational sports. The selection of the honor award recipient is a member who continually makes significant contributions to student success and advancement of the association.
Gonsoulin has been on the forefront of NIRSA in leadership, service, commitment and guidance that includes a stint as president in 2004. He has authored more than 60 articles and made numerous presentations, chaired or co-hosted 15 professional conferences. Gonsoulin also has served on the boards of directors on nine different national, regional and state organizations including NIRSA.
He is a past recipient of NIRSA’s Regional Award of Merit and the Distinguished Service Award. Gonsoulin was also recently named in 2008 The University of Southern Mississippi’s Administrator of the Year and the Mississippi Administrator of the Year by the Association of Office Professionals.
Steve Rey, director of recreational sports at the University of Western Kentucky and Southern Miss alumnus, said, “It is because of the examples that Sid set for me, that I live a life of commitment to good causes outside of my family and work. To this day, I still marvel at his energy, drive and ability to create and sustain such great successes in anything he does.”
