Dr. James Pat Smith, right, talks with Dr. Gilbert Mason Jr. after giving a lecture on the wade-ins that occurred on Biloxi’s beaches in 1959 and through the early 1960s. The lecture, given at the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach Tuesday, kicked off the university’s semester-long academic service-learning courses.

Smith worked with Mason’s father, Dr. Gilbert Mason Sr. to publish his memoir, “Beaches, Blood and Ballots: A Black Doctor’s Civil Rights Struggle” which chronicles his struggle to gain civil rights on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. (Southern Miss Public Relations photo by Charmaine Williams)
