Media Advisory: Southern Miss Gulf Coast Professor to Make Black History Month Presentation PDF Print E-mail

WHAT: In recognition of Black History Month, Dr. Douglas Bristol, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi, will present “Knights of the Razor” during a brown bag lunch event.

WHERE: Room 204 of The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus library in Long Beach

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 24, noon – 1 p.m.

SPECIFICS: “Knights of the Razor,” a new book authored by Bristol, reflects on the lives of black barbers who were able to exercise free speech. Prior to the Civil War, these men had power over their white clients because they used sharp instruments while providing their services.

In addition to the presentation, the library is recognizing Black History Month with displays featuring African American artwork and books. The displays, located on the first and second floor of the Gulf Park campus library, will be available for viewing through the month of February.
